Proclaimed in November 1955 as a planned satellite city for post-war migrants and Holden workers, the suburb took its present shape through the South Australian Housing Trust build-out across the late 1950s and 1960s, with public-housing renewal and townhouse infill layered over the original street pattern from the 1990s onwards. The dominant stock is single-storey Trust-built detached and semi-detached houses in solid brick and later brick-veneer on uniform blocks off Philip Highway and the founding Trust streets. Streets such as Philip Highway, Main North Road, Elizabeth Way, Goodman Road, Ridley Road, Woodford Road, Winterslow Road, Yorktown Road, Ashfield Road, and Enford Street carry the bulk of the local stock, with Elizabeth City Centre, Playford Civic Centre, Playford Civic Centre Library, Playford International College, Kaurna Plains School, Ridley Reserve, and Dauntsey Oval anchoring the streetscape under the City of Playford.
